13 Missionary Hymns With Lyrics

Written by Madeline Peña

Hymnals have been very popular for hundreds of years. But what most people don’t know, is that there are specific hymns written for or used by missionaries. These hymns cover missional themes such as sacrifice, the lost, and victory only through Christ. Throughout this post, we will cover 13 missionary hymns including the lyrics, along with the “Behind the Hymn” section. This section will cover some history of the hymn such as the author and setting, as well as how the hymn affects missionaries.

These hymns have inspired missionaries for centuries, and they continue to inspire today.

1. “O’er the Gloomy Hills of Darkness”

“O’er the gloomy hills of darkness
Look my soul! be still, and gaze!
See the promises advancing
To a glorious Day of grace!
Blessed Jubilee,
Let thy glorious morning dawn!

Let the dark, benighted pagan,
Let the rude barbarian see
That divine and glorious conquest
Once obtained on Calvary.
Let the Gospel
Loud resound from pole to pole

Fly abroad, thou mighty Gospel!
Win and conquer, never cease;
May thy lasting wide dominion
Multiply and still increase.
Sway Thy scepter,
Saviour, all the world around!”

Behind the Hymn

This hymn was written around 1750 and it precedes the great Missionary Movement of the 19th and 20th centuries by many years. The author is  Rev. William Williams who happened to be a Welsh Methodist Reverand. As we can see from the hymn, there was a great passion from the author to look past the gloom of this world and to set our eyes on the bright promise of Jesus’ work on the cross.

During the author’s time, he would have been very familiar with the idea of barbaric paganism, due to the flesh-hungry pagans who once ruled Wales. So, the author ends the hymn with a beautiful rise from the once dark words to the precious hope ahead, which is the anticipation of the Good News.

2. “All Because We Do Not Love Them”

“Many souls today are dying,
Sin and sorrow is their lot;
Darkness shrouds them with its mantle,
All because we love them not.

Refrain:
All because we do not love them,
Millions fill the heathen grave;
Brother, can you see them perish,
When a little love would save?

Brother, can we guiltless linger,
When to us the truth is giv’n?
Tearless, see the heathen dying,
Without God or hope of heav’n?

Love brought Jesus down from glory,
On the cruel cross to die;
Can we say we love the heathen,
If we turn away their cry?

Love undying, love eternal—
Love will send us o’er the wave,
Will impel us to our duty,
Helpless heathen souls to save.

Jesus said, ‘Go, teach all nations’;
They are lost if we delay;
Can we face Him at the judgment,
If His word we disobey?”

Behind the Hymn

Written in 1910, by Daniel O. Teasley of New York, this hymn shows the absolute need and necessity of missions. Daniel O. Teasley had a heart for missions, and as a Pastor in New York, he saw in the Great Commission in Scripture. We can see through his writing that Teasley understood the importance of the missionary.

This hymn shows no mercy when it comes to the blunt, blatant, and sad truth of when the Church does not rise to love others. The lack of love clearly equates to a loss of souls for eternity, and Teasley wants the singer to recognize this. But yet, we must act on this truth. It is a hymn of conviction, and a movement to be a loving Christ-follower for the sake of the lost.

3. “Hasten, Lord, the Glorious Time”

“Hasten, Lord, the glorious time
When beneath Messiah’s sway
Every nation, every clime
Shall the Gospel call obey.
Mightiest kings its power shall own,
Heathen tribes His name adore,
Satan and his host o’erthrown
Bound in chains shall hurt no more”

Behind the Hymn

The author of this hymn comes from London, and her name is Miss Harriet Auber. She was an advocate for the pioneer missionaries of her time in the 19th century and chose to passionately portray the longing of the missionary to see Christ return.

This hymn is a call and a yearning to see the Lord’s return, in which Auber would regularly meditate on. This hymn is greatly inspired by Psalm 72, which is considered to be a “Messianic Psalm”. “HASTEN, LORD, THE GLORIOUS TIME” was sung by many missionaries of her time, because of its truth of all nations bowing to the Messiah and the encouragement of the power living inside of man from Christ, with no fear of the enemy.

4. “Watchman, Tell Us of the Night”

“Watchman, tell us of the night.
What its signs of promise are!
(Antistrophe)
Traveler, on yon mountain height.
See that glory-beaming star!

Watchman, does its beauteous ray
Aught of hope or joy foretell?
(Antistrophe)
Trav’ler, yes; it brings the day,
Promised day of Israel.

Watchman, tell us of the night;
Higher yet that star ascends.
(Antistrophe)
Trav’ler, blessedness and light
Peace and truth its course portends.

Watchman, will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
(Antistrophe)
Trav’ler, ages are its own.
See! it bursts o’er all the earth

Watchman, tell us of the night,
for the morning seems to dawn.
Traveler, shadows take their flight;
doubt and terror are withdrawn.

Watchman, you may go your way;
hasten to your quiet home.
Traveler, we rejoice today,
for Emmanuel has come!”

Behind the Hymn

The author of this hymn is Sir John Bowring and it was written in 1825. Bowring played a huge role in society, the world government, and the Christian faith. He also showed excellence and brilliance in linguistics, which led him to write many riveting poems and hymns. Above all, Bowring understood the Good News of the Gospel and the importance of missions.

This song is the message of the arrival of Jesus. It is a missionary hymn, for it tells all the news that Jesus is the Son of Man, and God Himself. It tells the story of Christian believers, in which Jesus came to be with us on earth. Missionaries are happy to sign this hymn because it is the joyful, triumphant truth.

5.”Ye Christian Heros, Wake To Glory”

“Ye Christian heroes, wake to glory:
Hark, hark! what millions bid you rise!
See heathen nations bow before you,
Behold their tears, and hear their cries.
Shall pagan priest, their errors breeding,
With darkling hosts, and flags unfurled,
Spread their delusions o’er the world,
Though Jesus on the Cross hung bleeding?
To arms! To arms!
Christ’s banner fling abroad!
March on! March on! all hearts resolved
To bring the world to God.

O, Truth of God! can man resign thee,
Once having felt thy glorious flame?
Can rolling oceans e’er prevent thee,
Or gold the Christian’s spirit tame?
Too long we slight the world’s undoing;
The word of God, salvation’s plan,
Is yet almost unknown to man,
While millions throng the road to ruin.
To arms! to arms!
The Spirit’s sword unsheath:
March on! March on! all hearts resolved,
To victory or death”

Behind the Hymn

Strikingly, the author of this hymn is unknown. However, this does not take away from the respect of the hymn. This can be shown by its print in the American Vocalist, which gives “Ye Christian Heros, Wake To Glory” a strong reputation. This hymn was likely used in early evangelistic and missional church meetings in America.

The hymn is an ode to the former American missionaries who went before the hymn was written. Calling the missionaries ” Christian heroes” was a compelling way of honoring those who had gone before. It highlights the truth of what is happening in the world and encourages missionaries to still carry on in Christ and for Christ.

6. “The Morning Light is Breaking”

“The morning light is breaking!
The darkness disappears;
The sons of earth are waking
To penitential tears;
Each breeze that sweeps the ocean
Brings tidings from afar,
Of nations in commotion,
Prepared for Zion’s war.

Rich dews of grace come o’er us
In many a gentle shower,
And brighter scenes before us
Are opening every hour.
Each cry to heaven going
Abundant answer brings,
And heavenly gales are blowing
With peace upon their wings.

Blest river of Salvation,
Pursue thy onward way;
Flow thou to every nation,
Nor in thy richness stay.
Stay not till all the lowly
Triumphant reach their home;
Stay not till all the holy
Proclaim, ‘The Lord is come’!”

Behind the Hymn

Surprisingly enough, this hymn was written by the same man who wrote “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”. The author is Samuel Francis Smith. He was a pastor, writer, editor, amongst other specialties. In 1808, Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He wrote at least 26 hymns in his time, all of which were used in church services across America.

This hymn is considered missional because of the empowering words in which it bestows upon the missionary. “Peace upon their wings” is imagery that the author uses to describe the outgoing missionaries. He also creates a theme of an outward movement of missionaries who “flow” to every nation. The missionary is encouraged to not stay in their nation, but to proclaim the Good News to all.

7. “Morning Has Broken”

“Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight
Mine is the morning
Born of the one light Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise ev’ry morning
God’s recreation of the new day

Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world”

Behind the Hymn

“Morning Has Broken” was written in 1931 by an English author, Eleanor Farjeon. Originally, it was published in a book called Songs of Praise because it suited the necessity for a hymn that gave thanks for each day. This hymn can be used by missionaries all over the world to inspire them for the day ahead. Missionaries need encouragement, and this hymn is perfect for that.

This hymn gives the feeling of joy and encouragement. It reminds the reader that there is a newness to each day, and that God is sovereign over all. This is brightness that every missionary longs for each convert to understand; there is hope in each new day.

8. “Speed Away, Speed Away!”

“Speed away! Speed away on your mission of light,
To the lands that are lying in darkness and night;
‘Tis the Master’s command; go ye forth in His name, The wonderful gospel of Jesus proclaim;
Take your lives in your hand, to the work while ’tis day, Speed away! speed away! speed away!

Speed away, speed away with the life-giving Word,
To the nations that know not the voice of the Lord; Take the wings of the morning and fly o’er the wave, In the strength of your Master the lost ones to save; He is calling once more, not a moment’s delay,
Speed away! speed away! speed away!

Speed away, speed away with the message of rest,
To the souls by the tempter in bondage oppressed;
For the Saviour has purchased their ransom from sin, And the banquet is ready. O gather them in;
To the rescue make haste, there’s no time for delay, Speed away! speed away! speed away!”

Behind the Hymn

It was 1890 when this hymn was first released. Fanny J. Crosby is the writer. It is said about Crosby, “Without much question, Fanny Crosby was the premiere gospel songwriter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She wrote something like 8,500 songs, and quite a few of them are still popular–To God Be the GloryBlessed AssuranceSafe in the Arms of JesusPass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour, and many more (WordWiseHymns).”

This is a missionary hymn because, since it’s origin, the hymn has been used to say farewell to departing missions. The hymn describes why missionaries leave, it describes the Great Commission. Crosby truly captures the intensity and urgency of the Gospel being spread by all missionaries throughout the world.

9. “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed from the Fall,
hail Him who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
the wormwood and the gall,
go spread your trophies at His feet,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
and crown Him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe
on this terrestrial ball,
to Him all majesty ascribe,
and crown Him Lord of all.
To Him all majesty ascribe,
and crown Him Lord of all.

Crown him, you martyrs of our God,
Who from his altar call;
Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod
And crown him Lord of all.
Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod
And crown him Lord of all.

O seed of Israel’s chose race,
Now ransomed from the fall,
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace
And crown him Lord of all.

Hail him, you heirs of David’s line,
Whom David Lord did call,
The God Incarnate, man divine,
And crown him Lord of all.
The God Incarnate, man divine,
And crown him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can never forget
The wormwood and the gall,
Go, spread your trophies at his feet
And crown him Lord of all.
Go, spread your trophies at his feet
And crown him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe
And crown him Lord of all.

Oh, that with yonder sacred throng
We at his feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all.
We’ll join the everlasting song
And crown him Lord of all.

Behind the Hymn

This hymn has been called the “National Anthem of Christendom”. The author is an English preacher named Edward Perronet. Not only was Perronet a preacher, but he was also a missionary himself. This hymn was first seen in the public eye in a magazine called “Gospel Magazine”, in 1779. It was also “in Perronet’s 1785 book, ‘Occasional Verses, Moral and Sacred'”.

Inspired by a missionary, this hymn reminds all missionaries who they serve, the cost of serving Christ, and the reason why all serve Him. It is a humbling, yet inspiring hymn for the missionary. Even reading this hymn to an unbeliever, would give the missionary a good tool to explain the God of Isreal, in which Christian missionaries serve. The hymn brings all back to remembrance of who God is and who we are.

10. “Onward Christian Soldiers!”

“Onward, Christian soldiers,
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ the Royal Master
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!
Onward, Christian soldiers, etc.

Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one body we,
One in hope, in doctrine,
One in charity”

Behind the Hymn

This hymn was released in the 1800s, like most others. However, this hymn was published in 1865. The author of this piece is by Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould. It is considered some of his most inspiring work and is even still used today. Baring-Gould was inspired by 2 Timothy 2:3, which says “You, therefore, must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

Today, even, missionaries will reflect on this hymn. Many would say that missions are on the frontline of Christianity’s “soldiers”. This hymn is a helpful reminder to the modern-day missionary, that we are fighting the “good fight of faith” and that it will not always be easy. “Onward Christian Soldiers!” also reminds the reader that we are a unified brotherhood, in which the Bible is very clear.

11. “Take my Life and Let it Be”

“Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee”

Behind the Hymn

The author of this hymn is Frances Ridley Havergal (1836 – 1879). Originally, it was published in 1874, and it contained 11 verses. Havergal, in her time, was considered to be a phenomenal religious poet and hymn-writer. A quote of Havergal about her beloved hymn;

“I went for a little visit of five days,” wrote Frances Havergal, explaining what prompted her to write her well-known hymn… “There were ten persons in the house; some were unconverted and long prayed for, some converted but not rejoicing Christians. [God] gave me the prayer, ‘Lord, give me all in this house.’ And He just did. Before I left the house, everyone had got a blessing. The last night of my visit I was too happy to sleep and passed most of the night in renewal of my consecration, and those little couplets formed themselves and chimed in my heart one after another till they finished with ‘ever only, ALL FOR THEE!'”

— Frances Ridley Havergal, Christianity.com

This is the ultimate anthem of surrender for the missionary. Missionaries understand the desperate need of our surrender to the Lord. They will often connect to this hymn because it resonates with their lives. As missionaries, as Havergal writes, we even need to surrender our will to Jesus. He then will make it His own, and use us in profound ways.

12. “Thine be the Glory

“Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son;
endless is the victory, thou o’er death hast won;
angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay.

Chorus:
Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son,
Endless is the vict’ry, thou o’er death hast won.

Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;
Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
let the Church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;
for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life;
Life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love:
Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above”

Behind the Hymn

This hymn was written by Edmond Budry and published in 1884.  It was translated to English by Richard Birch Hoyle in 1923, and published in 1925 by the World Student Christian Federation. Originally the song was written for Easter Sunday, but it has turned into much more.

This hymn is one of victory. The line “Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the vict’ry, thou o’er death hast won”, can be sung by missionaries all around the world. Likewise, the message is universal; the triumph of Christ’s victory on the cross. This hymn may remind missionaries that they are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus who strengthens us.

13. “O Spirit of the Living God”

“O Spirit of the living God,
in all the fullness of your grace,
wherever human feet have trod,
descend upon our fallen race.

Give tongues of fire and hearts of love
to preach the reconciling word;
anoint with power from heaven above
whenever gospel truth is heard.

Let darkness turn to radiant light,
confusion vanish from your path;
those who are weak inspire with might:
let mercy triumph over wrath!

O Spirit of our God, prepare
the whole wide world the Lord to meet;
breathe out new life, like morning air,
till hearts of stone begin to beat.

Baptize the nations; far and near
the triumphs of the cross record;
till Christ in glory shall appear
and every race declare him Lord! Amen.”

Behind the Hymn

Written by James Montgomery in 1823, it is said that “Montgomery wrote this hymn to be sung at the Public Meeting of the Auxiliary Missionary Society for the West Riding of Yorkshire, Salem Chapel, Leeds, June 4, 1823. It was first printed on a fly-sheet for that meeting, and in the Evangelical Magazine the following August” (Hymntime.com).

This hymn was written for a missionary society. This makes sense because the hymn is about the Spirit of God and about His grace, both of which are essential to the missionary journey. The hymn acknowledges the sin of man, while at the same time it spreads the truth that the entire world may come to meet the Lord. There is destitution in the world, yet the missionary brings hope.

Final Thoughts

The hymns above have inspired, encouraged, and impacted missionaries for centuries. Allow the lyrics to establish your mind, especially if you are a missionary who needs support and renewal. In the same vein, you may find the worship your heart longs for, like so many other missionaries before you.
