A Day In the Life of a Global Intern: France

Every global internship site is different. Different places, people, cultures, language, ministry, food, and way of life. Our Global Internship in Marseille, France is no exception. Marseille is a port city at the south of France that has been at the center of Mediterranean trade since 600 BC. While Marseille is unapologetically French it continues to see an influx of immigrants from North African countries, making the city a cultural and religious melting pot. Take a peek into a typical day of a life for a student on their Global Internship in France. Here is the full schedule example schedule for a typical day on the France Global Internship:
  • 8:15am­-8:45am – Woke up and got ready: I usually have a few bananas and some dates for breakfast, along with Moroccan Mint tea.
  • 8:45am­-9:30am – Took the bus to language school: Sometimes we stop at the bakery to grab a croissant or pain au chocolat on the way.
  • 9:30am­-12:00pm – Language class: My class consists of me, my two teammates and a Canadian woman (we live and partner with her). Today we focused on pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structure.
  • 12:00pm-12:20pm – Went to the supermarket: We picked up any food we needed for the day (The French buy groceries daily), and stopped at a bakery to pick up a few baguettes.
  • 12:45pm-1:45pm – Prepared and ate lunch in our apartment: Today I had hummus (imported from Israel and so delicious!), raw veggies, Taboulé (a Lebanese dish, which consists of couscous, parsley, tomatoes, fresh mint, onions, lemon juice and olive oil), and, of course, part of a baguette.
  • 2:00pm-2:45pm–Prayer walked through our neighborhood with one of my teammates
  • 3:00pm-4:00pm–Quiet time
  • 4:00pm-4:30pm – Goûter: (Pronounced: Goo-tay), which is a daily snack time observed by the French. Today I had a piece of baguette with some tomato and fresh mozzarella cheese, with Herbs de Provence (a seasoning from our region).
  • 4:30pm­-6:00pm–Worked on French homework
  • 6:00pm­-9:00pm – Took the bus downtown to Stu’Dieu: Stu’Dieu is a student small group in the church plant I do ministry with. We spent some time in worship, then had a short teaching with a time of discussion. French people love to debate!
  • 9:00pm-10:30pm – Hung out with friends: We went to a nearby restaurant with a few students. We had Kebab sandwiches, paninis and fries (with Algerian sauce!). After that we took the metro home.
  • 11:00pm-Finished any homework that was due, then got ready for bed.
