This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” -John 3:19-21 (NIV)-
Have you ever done something in fear that someone may find you out? Have the shadows of secrecy ever been your best friend as you did something you know others wouldn’t approve of?
During my quiet time one evening, the Holy Spirit spoke just at the moment I was about to talk with God. Though not an audible voice, it was, without question, a clear voice that got my immediate attention. “Jarred, bring everything into the light. Worship me in this way: bring your struggles to the other men and be transparent with them.”
Very practically I considered my daily walk and asked the Holy Spirit to show me what areas He doesn’t like. The amazing thing is that the Holy Spirit is crystal clear to bring things up when we ask that question. When I asked, he didn’t hold back.
If you continue to fight this lust, gluttony, hatred, self-pity, envy, etc. by yourself in the darkness, you will lose every time. When you bring these issues into the light before God and man, you will see something drastically different happen inside of you. The Lord will do an incredible work inside of you, and will begin to change you from the inside out.
Please understand that the key does not lay in simply confessing things to others, but instead in the act of coming into the light and allowing the Lord to change you. Ask the Holy Spirit, He will show you how to come into the light. It’s most likely that He will tell you to confess it to some fellow believers, but understand that it’s not you confessing that changes you, it’s the heart that says “God, I want to come into the light and live in truth” that allows God to change you.
