His name is Richard Dawkins, he was born in Nairobi, Kenya, he is currently one of the most outspoken atheists, and today is his birthday.
I have often experienced church goers railing on Richard Dawkins for his blatant disbelief in Christ and doubt in God. I would listen as they called him wicked, stupid, bent, etc. They call him a moron for believing the theory of evolution and berating people who claim themselves to be Christians. Because he ridicules us, are we to ridicule him?
Don’t we see how much we reflect the world when we do that? Don’t we see how much we reflect the world when we call him such names?
Consider this passage:
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? -Matthew 5:44-47 (NIV)-
I think that we believers need to stop looking at Mr. Dawkins as a talking human head and start realizing that he’s just as human as we are. If he was standing in front of us in person, would we say such things to him? If we would say such things to him, would we then have the audacity to say that we reflect the love of Jesus Christ?
How could we?
Matthew 12:34 tells us that out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. What’s in your heart is best judged by what comes out of your mouth. Please consider this: if you claim that Mr. Dawkins is an idiot for not believing, if you spew out mockery at him, what makes you think that you actually have the light of Jesus inside of you? Do you really know God, or are you just regurgitating apologetics because you were told to shun evolution at a young age?
Lord, we pray for Richard Dawkins, asking that you would push through his pride and tenderize his heart towards the Gospel. Abba, we don’t want him to go to hell, and we know that you don’t want him to go to hell either, but we know you are just, and that it is impossible to please God unless there is faith. We ask that you would put in his path people who truly love you, true followers of Christ who care nothing for winning debates and care everything for winning souls. God, forgive us for ever speaking harshly of this man. We cry out for his heart, asking that you would show him what Jesus is truly like by the lives of people who truly follow you.
Happy birthday Mr. Dawkins.
