As classes wrapped up on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015, eight dynamic student teams gathered in front of Bethany Global University, awaiting the kick off of the thrilling competition that was to unfold—The Forge.
For the next three days, students faced different challenges, mental and physical, to improve their teamwork skills and develop their perseverance, patience, leadership, and determination. Here is what one of our students had to say about the event.
“The Forge was great. It gave me an opportunity to be a leader … I loved that there were both physical and mental challenges meant to help us grow in our ability to work with a team.” —Kaylee Harker, BGU Sophomore
During the Forge, participants went on scavenger hunts in downtown Minneapolis, solved riddles, and competed in obstacle races across campus. All the elements were designed to help students think critically, work together as a team, and overcome adversity.
“The Forge gets you out of your comfort zone and makes you come face to face with your weaknesses.” —Nolan Xiong, BGU Freshman
Through these events, students came to identify and overcome attitudes and emotions that often go unchecked in their daily routine. They came to have a clearer understanding of the importance of patience and perseverance, they learned the value of comprehending one another, and the relevance of retaining peace in the mists of difficult situations.
“The students that participated in the Forge this year brought a great deal of enthusiasm and energy to the event. They learned a great deal about teamwork, determination and leadership. I was impressed with their ingenuity, perseverance and ability to work together. I anticipate there are lessons they learned this weekend that will serve them well in life.” —Dave Hasz, Executive Vice-President of BGU
While the event was designed to be a competition, teams learned that it didn’t matter if they won or lost. What mattered was that they remembered the lessons they learned in the Forge that would help them win in life.
